on Leica

The Scot loves photography, and admittedly has more cameras than the average house has chairs.  However, there is one thing in the photo of which The Scot does not approve:

Anything and everything Leica.  Well, maybe not everything… Their lenses are hot, but forget the QPR!

Leica is that brand that, for some reason, everybody likes to love.

ahh yes, but was it made there?

ahh yes, but was it made there?

Why?  Can a logical person tell me why and how their camera bodies are better than, say, a Voigtlander, or a Nikon or Canon?  I mean, they all do the same thing.  They all let in a certain amount of light, for a given amount of time.  Some of them even do this automatically, and very well at that.  The Leica does nothing more, but you’d expect it to at least rub your back, or tell you it loves that shot you just took for the price you pay for it!

For example:

  • Voigtlander Bessa R3 body: $800 or less.
  • Leica M body (doesn’t matter): $5000 or more!

Plus, they make crap like this.  I have no idea what that cost, but I’m sure I could put a down payment on another house with it.

Here’s how The Scot summs up Leica: You don’t need one, you want one.. and for the life of me I can’t figure out why.  Hell I could even justify buying a Porsche or Ferrari before justifying a Leica.

I welcome comments, debate, hate mail.

For the record, The Scot uses a Canon DSLR system and a Panasonic LX3 Point and Shoot. Has 6 other film cameras and none of them are a Leica.  He ocassionally updates his Flickr account.
